Default Two versions of same file

You haven't got two versions of the file, you have two windows open.
Close one of the windows (by clicking on the x in the top right hand corner
of that window, not the one in the top right-hand corner of Excel itself)
then save the file. Next time you open the file, only one window will be
open.

Why do I get two versions of the same Excel file (xls:1 and xls:2)? How
do I
change it back to a normal (without version extension numbers) Excel file?
