This might work for you. Select the problem cells. In the Format | Cells
| Number dialog, switch to Custom. It will look something like this:

_($* #,##0.00_);_($* (#,##0.00);_($* "-"??_);_(@_)
^^ ^^ ^^

Delete the asterisk-space pairs.
