Excel changes spelling of word
Depending on your needs, you may instead choose to unclick the entire
"Replace text as you type" option. If you work with stock symbols a lot,
this could happen again to you, without you even noticing. That could be a
Bad Thing.
As for the dollar/percent sign thing, it sounds like once you entered a
dollar sign Excel decided it was a currency value; to correct it, go to the
formatting options and change it to a percent value. That's in Options,
Cells, in the Number tab.

this is not a correct symbol. Have tried every thing by
right clicking to clear cell, and the change always
happens. Could there be a formula in the cell which I
cannot find? This happens both in XP and Vista Excel
version 2003.
And also, inserting a dollar sign accidentally in a cell
which is incorrect, the correct sign should have been
the percentage sign. Cannot correct the error to
remove the dollar sign.
