Default MATCH problem

The tilde ~ character is a special control character. To use it
literally, use two. For example,

=MATCH("AWDAXJ$(RI#S)~~£",G1:G10,0)

Hi - can anyone tell me why I get #NA when I try to match a cell with contents:
AWDAXJ$(RI#S)~£
with another cell with exactly the same entry?
And is there a workaround?
Thanks
