How do i make a cell change colour
a) if the date entered in it has passed

Select the range, eg select A2:A10 (A2 active),
then apply CF using Formula Is:
=AND(A2<TODAY(),A2<"")
Format to taste OK

The additional check: A2<""
is to prevent blank cells (if any) from spuriously triggering the CF
