Shane is right - it will be a file associations problem.
Excel: Help Detect and Repair may fix it.
If not try
Start Run "%programfiles%\Microsoft Office\OfficeNN\Excel.exe" /Regserver
where NN is blank for Excel 2000 and earlier, 10 for 2002, 11 for 2003 and 12
for 2007.
