Default Not able to open Excel files

Bill,

I added %1 and then could not delete it...
So I could replicate the problem you had...

This is what I did to solve it...
1. Delete the XLS type from the Folder Options|Type list.
(I guess this is not really required)

2. Followed Peo's suggestion and executed the following from Start|Run
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Excel.exe" /Regserver
(I had to change the path from the one given in the link provided by Peo)

This solved my problem... This will

I just checked on my laptop as well. I have exactly what you have. The
problem seems to be the "%1" (no quotes now) one space after the /e
I can not get the %1 to go away no matter what I do. This seems to be the
problem. Does anyone have an idea how to get rid of this?

I am the admin...it's my home computer. I have not changed how I logged in
or anything like that....

My laptop has the following in 'Application used...' box

and this in 'DDE message '
[open("%1")]

I am surprised that you are not able to change the settings... How did you
change it earlier? Did you login as another user?

What I meant was deleting the 'Open' entry or XLS entry altogether and
creating it again but that may not work since you are not able to edit it
even...

You probably need to log in as administrator and then update the setting.

Thank you. I tried the "open with" option, and it is saying "the file can
not be found" for all excel files I try. I do not know what you mean by
"deleting that option" I erase it...hit okay....and it just goes back to
previous setting... I have really messed up...

Understood.
You should be able to edit the setting again.
Try deleting that option and then creating again...

Another things you can try is to
SHIFT-RIGHT CLICK on any Excel file on the desktop
Choose 'Open With|Choose Program' and choose Excel from the programs..
Click on 'Always use the selected...'

start...control panel....folder options....file
types...xls....advanced...open.....edit....and then told to add "%1" to the
end of the application line.... now...the files on the desktop which were
opening slow....will not open at all..... "name not recognized" excel
files from email will not open....but files I already had....do open from
within excel.... things are deteriorating pretty fast since I did this....
It will not let me just eliminate the %1 now.....

Where and how did you add "%1"?
What happens when you try to open the Excel files from the desktop?

I was instructed to add "%1" in the update files list. Now I can not open
any excel files on my desktop. I CAN open them from inside excel. The %1
will not allow itself to be deleted now! I was just trying to solve
extremely slow opening of files. Please help?
