Hi Julie,
I have created another template using the method you outlined (a single
page
this time not a workbook) and the good news, is that it turned up in the
default template folder this time as a "template" file, but when I used it
to
create a new work book and saved this as an "excel work book" the new work
book icon and properties were again that of a "file" type file not an
"excel
work book" type file which was what I had saved it as. I guess we are
making
some progress in this.
Regards

Hi Joyce
i have never seen this problem .. could you create a test template from
scratch and follow the steps outlined i my previous email and see what
happens with this one ... btw by "file" extension i guess you mean a
*.xls
as opposed to a *.xlt extension of a template.

Hi Julie,
I saved the work book I had created as a "template" as you sugested and
sent
it off to the default excel template folder, but when I went to open a
new
workbook based on this template it was not in the default template
folder.
I
then went into this folder to find the workbook there but instead of it
being
a template as I had saved it, it was once again a "file" extention.

Hi Joyce
to use a template you don't open it and save it, you open a new
workbook
based on the template ... so starting from scratch the process is
create a workbook
save it as a template - file / save as ... change save as type to
template - leave the location to whatever excel defaults to
close the file
to use it
file /new
on 2003 choose
On My Computer under Templates on the task pane
choose your template OK
and excel will create a new workbook based on your template
hope this helps

I run office 2003 and have created an Excel workbook and saved it as
a
"template" in a folder on the desk top. I have now opened this
template
and
attempted to re-save it as an "Excel work book " in a new folder so
as
to
use
it, but when I close this new work book copy it closes as a "file"
not
a
work
book. What is happening here and how do I get excel to save it as a
new
"workbook"
