Default XL Runtime error '429' message: a question to Microsoft's experts

When I uninstalled my MS Office XP, I assume that there remained some files
in WIN XP that hook up with EXCEL. So when I reinstall Office XP, it should
use these files. What happens is that as soon as I turn Excel on, the '429'
message appears, with no file being loaded into Excel. I read some text
issued by MS which talks about COM and automation files that may be
corrupted. By in my case, I am not using any automation schemes, since the
error appears as soon as I open Excel.

I don't want to have to reinstall all of the WIN XP package, which would
hopefully load a set of original files used by Excel and therefore they would
be clean. My question is: what are the WIN XP OS files that are used by Excel
and can these be replaced by new or clean ones and would that not logically
solve my '429' error problem as soon as I reinstall Office XP?

A speedy response, as well as your experts' help with my problem is
appreciated, since I use Excel all the time and it is one of my favorite
pieces of software. Thank you for your help.
