Default how can you place dates from1996-2006 on the x axis?

1996-2006 are not dates, they are years. If you tell a chart to use the date
1996, it thinks you mean the 1996th day in Excel's calendar system, which
was 18 June 1905. You have at least three choices:

1. Use a category scale with years as X labels.
2. Use dates, like 1/1/1996, 1/1/1997, etc.
3. Use an XY chart with years as X values.
