Default Monthly subtotals

Enter this formula in a helper column:

=MONTH(A1)

and copy down, assuming your dates are in column A. Then when you do
Data | Subtotals look for each change in the helper column. If you
want the names of the months rather than the numbers, you can use this
formula:

=TEXT(A1,"mmm")

Hope this helps.
