James, I have this problem as well. Please let me know if you've resolved it.

cold check it out and/or access it and it was no problem.

Now when I try to open it from the network or through the sharepoint
interface, I can check it in or out but always get an error message that the
last person who opened it has it locked for editing even though they don't
have it open or checked out.
