If you're using a checkbox from the Forms toolbar, right-click the
checkbox and choose Format Control...

In the control tab, enter a cell reference (e.g., Z1) in the Cell Link
field. That cell will return TRUE/FALSE. In your target cell, enter

=--Z1

which coerces the boolean TRUE/FALSE to 1/0.
