Some easy steps to lead you in (xl2003)
Suppose the col header for the names col is: xxx
Select the col, click Data Pivot table
Click Next Next
In step 3, click Layout
Drag n drop "xxx" in ROW area
Drag n drop "xxx" in DATA area
(it'll appear as "Count of xxx")
Click OK Finish. That's it!

Hop over to the pivot sheet (just to the left)
where you'd find both the list of unique names (that you seek)
& the corresponding counts.
