Default count values

In column 1 are cells with different values (some cells have 10, other have
100 other have 500 etc); How can excel say "there are X cells with value 10,
Y cells with value 100, Z cells with value 500 etc."?

A pivot table could also easily deliver this for you in seconds

Some easy steps to lead you in (in xl2003):
Ensure the col has a col label in the top cell, say: xxx
Select a cell within the col, click Data PivotTable
Click NextNext
In step 3, click Layout
Drag n drop xxx within the ROW area
Drag n drop xxx within the DATA area
It might appear as: Sum of xxx
If so, double-click on "Sum of xxx",
change it to "Count" under "Summarize by"
Click to OK out Finish

Hop over to the pivot sheet (just to the left) for the results, ie:
A listing of the uniques in the 1st col (eg:10,100,500)
and next to it, the corresponding counts
