format. Maybe post back with a more descriptive
explanation.

In the mean time, you can shorten that formula to:

=LEFT(TEXT(B2,"ddd"),2)

If you need to test for an empty cell:

=IF(B2="","",LEFT(TEXT(B2,"ddd"),2))
