Default xp 2003

To clarify.

When Excel starts up it will try to open any files it finds in the default
XLSTART folder or a designated "at start up, open all files in" a folder which
has its path in ToolsOptionsGeneral.

Any file means just that............looks like you have a bunch of Word *.docs
in one or the other of the above.

I would guess that the "at start up open all files in" might have been set to
c:\data\word folder.

Open that folder and move the files to another location. Try start Excel again.

If successful, go to ToolsOptionsGeneral and delete the path in "at start up
etc."

To deal with the XLSTART folder if that's the culprit..............

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
being the usual folder.

Or could be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART

Remove any files in either of those folders.

I just tried to actuivate Excel and ;

Message appeared from MS Office Excell(MSOE) - " Excell experianced a
serious error the last time the add-in 'c:\data\word\holiday biscut.doc' was
opened.Would you like to disable this add-in? To reactivate this add-in,
click About Microsoft Excel on the Help menu, then click on disabled items.

I clicked on yes to disable the add-in & the the Excel screen opened with a
MS Excel Message superimposed thereon. "Adware.doc :File format not valid"

Clicked on OK and messageshowed another another invalid.doc file. Did this
many times with same result listing another invalid .doc file

Could not get out of this loop and could not close pc through the Start menu.

Had to use pc reset button

Not too clear on what you are asking but I will hazard a guess that when you
start Excel, many files try to open due to improper use of your XLSTART folder
or an "alternate startup location"

Is this the case?

Find your XLSTART folder and move the files to another new folder for the time
being.

Can you get Excel started at all in order to make some changes In ToolsOptions?

If not, post back with more details.
