Default Sort all cells except one?

Select the columns (and, if necessary, the rows) which you want to sort,
before you impose the sort.
By the way, you'll find that merging cells is strongly discouraged here.

I have a spreadsheet with a sort on the date column (A). All columns (B-K)
correspond with column A. I have a notes section placed on the same sheet
which is column K and all of these rows under this column need to be
merged
but when I do so I can no longer sort ascending or descending.

So my question is...

Is there any way I can exclude column K from the sort?
