I have a shared excel file that multiple users can access and update at the
same time. However, many times a .tmp file with a long erroneous extension
(i.e. testfile.tmp1341q98uyg). This creates problems because this file is
located on the network server and all users have a shortcut to the file on
their desktop and then they have problems opening the file because it is not
the name the shortcut is 'looking' for. This happens quite frequently.

What could the problem be?
