Boy do I feel stupid.
After searching every dialog box and webpage I found a checkbox in options
which seems to override the links settings. Under Edit tab there is an
option to ask to update links.
In my defence I do think that it is a bit daft to have options in links to
ask to update and prompt only to have it over ridden by another checkbox
options elsewhere.
thanks for your time

thanks. Yeah checked again still no avail. I am beginning to think that
it is a bug when 2003 is installed on Vista Ultimate.
As I said it continually prompts for the update links despite the setting
being set to automatic update without prompting.
What makes matters worse is that I have loads of excel sheets with links
and it is a pain having to click on update links everytime.
Any other ideas?
Cheers

It's worked for me and several other posters.
I'd say double check your work and try it again.
11 is for xl2003.

hi thanks for your reply - unfortunately I tried the solution - it didnt
work. Firstly I did not have the directory 9 as mentioned in the post
solution, BUT i did have a 11 and 10 in the same location so I added the
DWORD to both these directories under options but to no avail.
Any other ideas?
thanks

I have recently bought a new machine with windows vista and I have
installed
office 2003.
I have a number of excel sheets with links and everytime I open them
it
keeps asking to update. I have change the settings for updates to
update
without prompt and then saved it but when I open the file again it
asks
to
update the links.
It is really annoying can anyone shed any light on this.
