"tables" In this context means tables as in the DataTables menu.

Recalculating such tables can be very time consuming, because it effectively means recalculating your workbook many times (the
actual number of times depends on the size and number of dimensions of the table).

In the development stage you might want to recalculate automatically to test the calculation model for one set of data. Then you
could use this option. After development is finished, you could switch to full automatic calculation.
Of course there are other ways to achieve the same result, but this happens to be an option Excel provides which is quite handy.
