As you described it, it just sounds like you are typing a '5' into the sheet,
and Excel is behaving as it normally should/would. Try to delete the
problematic cell(s) and simply type in the '500' again. You can change the
formatting to some custom-type, but I don't think this will resolve your
specific issue.
