Default empty values for a specific field

I have a pivot table (excel 2003) based on mulitple tabs (more than 65.536
rows) which worked fine until recently.
One specific field shows no values, but only from one tab, so in the pivot
table there is a clientname with a clientnumber, but the same client also has
an empty 'clientnumber' field where there should be a value.

I checked the sourcedata and nothing has changed: it still shows the
clientnumbers in the first tab, but when I doubleclick a value in the
pivottable (where the clientnumber is empty) it also shows no value for the
clientnumber.

All other fields do show their values (at least, I think they do, because I
really can't trust my pivottable anymore).

I tried the 'ResetPageCaptions'-macro by Debra Dalgleish but to no avail.
They still won't show the values.
I also renamed the fieldname in the 5 sheets of sourcedata to maybe force
the pivottable to reread the info, but the pivottable still shows the old
name???
Then I tried to rebuild the pivottable by going into the wizard and
selecting the five sheets as sourcedata all over again, but then I get an
error saying something like 'unkown database-format C:\filename.xls' (don't
know the exact message, since I don't have an english version) so I can't
even get into the query.
Making a new pivot table in a new file will give the same errormessage.

Please help me.
Arnold.
