Default Excel Icons lost

Reregistering excel is a way of putting the settings in the windows registry
back to factory defaults.

Did you do both the /unregserver and /regserver commands?

If you didn't, make sure you do.

If you did, then I'd do it again (both commands).

If that doesn't work, I'd get my CD/DVD with MSOffice on it and reinstall excel
(or all of MSOffice if I was having trouble).

I don't know what happened, but the first thing I'd try is to reregister excel.

Close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /unregserver
(and hit enter)
then
excel /regserver
(and hit enter)

When I open My documents, I cannot see the normal Excel logo on the Excel
files. After I click on the file I get a pop up that states Windows cannot
open this file. I get a choice between letting the Internet find an
application or to pick one from a list. When I click pick one from the list
it takes me to Excel as an option, after clicking on that option the file
opens.

What happened to the Excel icons and why am I having to go through these
other steps?
