Default Read only vs file saving

Is the file marked ReadOnly (use windows explorer to check).

Is the file in a folder that you only have read access to?

I have a file that always gave me the option of opening as read only or not.
Now, all of a sudden, it just opens as read only. If I want to make changes,
I have to do a Save As a copy, which gets totally confusing. I checked the
options in save as and read only is checked, but it is my understanding that
it is supposed to give you the option of overriding the read only feature and
be able to make changes and have the file save accordingly. what got messed
up? I have already lost data that I thought was being changed and saved.
Any help is appreciated.
