Default how do I put ONLY an equal sign in a cell?

i wasn't pressing the enter sign, I really have to remember that. thanks.

On my XL2003, if I type an equal sign and then press Enter, the equal sign
appears in the cell. To repeat that in the cells under it, select the cell
with the equal sign, place your cursor on the tiny black square in the
bottom-right corner of that cell (cursor turns to a black plus sign), click
with the left mouse button and drag down as far as you need to.
