I have tried it and it works fine in Microsoft Excel 2003.

Do the following:

1. Click on any cell.
2. On the Format menu, click Cells. The Format Cells dialog appears.
3. Click the the Number tab. By default Number tab is selected.
4. Under the Category list click Currency.
5. Select the Yen symbol from the Symbol list or select JPY.
6. Click OK to return to the worksheet.
7. Enter a number and press enter. The cell will display the value in
currency symbol.
