Default The Links Effect

I have a destination workbook that contains links to a source workbook. The
source workbook contains rates that are updated from time to time. The
destination workbook is used as a template and saved accordingly. If I open a
new destination workbook (or template) and update the values as I open it and
then open an older destination workbook without updating, the rates in the
new template file change to the same as those in the older file without
prompting. If I open the old file first without updating and then open a new
destination workbook and update then the opposite happens, i.e. the rates in
the old file then change to the new rates without prompting. A quick fix
seems to be open each workbook in it's own version of excel, but does anyone
have any idea why this is?
