I think bj nailed it. I thought it was all workbooks because it has been
happening frequently, but I think it was just one workbook that I have been
referring to frequently (but not saving when I close it) -- that would
explain why I couldn't find a "global" fix. It also explains why it happens
frequently but not always. I had apparently selected a range of multiple
worksheets in this one file and when I saved it for the last time many months
ago, the cursor was in cell a3284 (for whatever weird reason). Since it's a
dormant project and I no longer save the file when I close it, it opens with
the cursor in a3284 of every sheet every time I open it.

differtent sheet depending on when you saved it.
