How can I format this formula: ="Metrics through "&today() so that it
reads Metrics through June 5, 2006 instead of Metrics through 39238. I
cannot get the date to format correctly in this formula.

I think this will do what you want...

="Metrics through "&TEXT(TODAY(),"mmmm d, yyyy")
