Default Error when updating links

Ruth, one thing you might try to narrow down the problem:

For each worksheet in your workbook, copy it to a new workbook, and save as
test1, test2, etc. Then close Excel and re-open Excel. Then open a new
workbook and see if the problem occurs. Close the workbook and open
another, .... This may narrow it down to a particular worksheet.

One other thought: It may be a defined name that is a link to another
workbook. Before doing the above, press CTL-F3 and review each range name
by selecting it and seeing where it is linked. If it is a linked name and
you do not need, delete it. I suspect this is the cause.

I have a number of workbooks that manage resources for projects -

There is a 'Master' workbook, that provides information about the
status
of
the projects, to the 'Team' workbooks, and information from the 'Team'
workbooks update the day to day activities of the resources.

The Startup prompt for the 'Team' workbooks are set to 'Don't display
the
alert and update links'
but when I open these, I am getting the Warning message - 'This
workbook
contains links to other data sources' -
I select 'Update' and get the mesage 'This workbook contains one or
more
links that cannot be updated' -
I select 'Edit links' and these update with no problem

Any suggestions as to why the links are not updating automatically? I
need
them to do so as the 'Team' managers are not good with Excel and ....
