problem initially selecting a cell

I'm running excel 2003. When I open a new spreadsheet my cursor/pointer
seems to be running a command. If I select a cell like I'm going to enter
data the cursor locks on the cell and the application acts like I'm holding
the right mouse button down to highlight a range of cells. Regardless of
where I move cursor it keeps hightlighting cells. even if I'm outside the
app's window it keeps scrolling thinking I'm trying to select a range of
cells. Anybody have any ideas?! TIA!
