Kindly provided by Beth melton one of the Office MVPs:-
Reports indicate the issue is caused by Windows XP update Q885250.
Uninstalling it appears to resolve the problem.

Might want to suggest your tech guys try this on one of the affected
machines

My computer tech people tell me this is a problem with a recent update.
Apparently this is showing up since the latest update.

When I try to save a file that I have adjusted with a new name I get
the
following message: The folder "name" isn't accessible. The folder may
be
located in an unavailable volume or protedted with a password. I have
been
saving files like this for years. What's up?
