Default Help, losing protection & read only with worksheets emailed out

When I protect worksheets in my excel file and email it out, the emailed file
is no longer protected when opened.
Also, when I email a file with "read only" status, the "read only" has
disappeared when the file is opened.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Is there an option I need to change or set?
