Try PRE-formatting the range or column as text. Or, for the date use a
custom format of "mm/yy"

Also another problem though less urgent is I occasioanlly need to type in
special numbers that begin with a zero or two into cells. These

then get scrapped of all the zeros they start with, e.g. typing in

automatically converts to 123456. I know I can type in ' before the number
as
a quick fix but this just seems rubbish - there must be a more permanent
fix???
