Default Customized worksheet security

When worksheet protection is applied, it is only applied to *locked* cells.
Lock the cells you want protected and unlock the cells you want unprotected
(Format/Cells/Protection).

Note that worksheet protection is very weak and won't stop anyone with
intent from unprotecting the sheet, but it is good for keeping users from
accidently modifying/overwriting things they should not be.

How can I keep others from editing certain columns in a worksheet WITHOUT
securing the entire worksheet. Can I do it w/o the other person having to
enter a password to edit unprotected cells?
