Have both w/sheets open. Where you want to insert the formula, enter
=A2, or whatever your cell number with the January 1, 2007 reading is
type in
- (minus)
Now click on the 2006 worksheet to make it active, go to the cell with Dec
2006's reading, click on it, and press <Enter
That will take you back to the 2007 sheet, where you will see the correct
context for entering such formulae
