It's a problem that's been posted lots of times. I've only seen it a few times
and when I did see it didn't cause any problems (except for irritation on my
part).

Some have guessed that an early version of Google Desktop search caused it.
Others have seen it without having that program installed.

If it really irritates you, then you've found the only solution that I've
seen--close excel and restart.
