Thank you. It works only on one row at a time. How can I get it to
search across all of the rows for the presence of the values? The
series runs from left to right across a row in multiple columns, so I
need to find the couplings that could be not just in Column A & B, but
possibly from A to C, or from C & F and so on.

Also, I forgot to mention this earlier, the formula you presented only works if the value is in the first column. If it isn't I get a zero, when I know the value does occur in other rows. How can I get the formula to count across the entire row from every column, not just starting from the first one? SUMPRODUCT seems to be the key, but am I doing something wrong?
