Default Expanding / Collapsing rows

"the help section doesn't do a very good job explaining it"

I agree completely.
Normally an outline has headings in one column and the data
in the adjoining column. You will just have to experiment with it.
There is an ungroup option available,
so it will be difficult to screw something up permanently.

if A1 contans the data header "Dates"
and B2-B7 contains the data that is to be "expanded/collapsed" then do I
group all cells A1-B7 using Data\Group & Outline\Group?
Sorry, the help section doesn't do a very good job explaining it.

Look at "Group and Outline" on the Data menu. --

I have a spreadsheet in which I'd like the ability to expand and collapse the
rows so row headers are only shown (Collapse) or the the data underneath each
header is shown (expand) Can Excel do this?

Thanks
