Make sure you enter the formula as an array: CTRL,SHIFT,ENTER (not just
ENTER).
If there is no max value that is less than the lookup value then the formula
will eturn 0.

I have the same problem as what the guy had. I tried what you wrote,
however, the formula MAX(IF(A1:A10<D1,A1:A10).... doesn't work for me.
It simply shows a #Value.
I was wondering if there is another way to find the maximum value that
is less than the lookup value in a unsorted range?
