I think we have a symantics problem here? A file = a workbook. A workbook =
a number of spreadsheets.

Do you mean that when you try to open several workbooks, you actually open
several instances of Excel, each having one workbook? Open Excel first, then
open the several workbooks.

Do you mean that you have only one spreadsheet per workbook, while in actual
fact you want to have more than one spreadsheet per workbook? Click on
Insert|Worksheet to add more sheets to the same workbook.
