Select the whole worksheet, and unmerge the cells.

I have a simple address book worksheet (last name, salutation, address,

All cells are formatted as TEXT having numbers and letters
cells vary in size, but all have same font, some have auto wrap, some
manual
indents, some columns are wider than others
when I try to sort by 'last name'/'first name' I get pop-up window
message:
"The operation requires merged cells to be identically sized."
I have tried to both protect and not protect the cells. I have assured no
hidden columns or rows are included. I know the cells are not identical,
but
they are under each column as far as width.
ANY IDEAS!?
