Use VLOOKUP:

for example, in cols C & D enter:

one 1
two 2
three 3
four 4
five 5
six 6
seven 7
eight 8
nine 9
ten 10

and in B1 enter:
four
then the following formula:
=VLOOKUP(B1,C:D,2,0) will return the number 4
