How many characters are we talking about? How much gets truncated?

I have never seen this one before. I have a spreadsheet, lets call this A,
that is linked to numerous other spreadsheets on my lan. When I call up
spreadsheet A, regardless of whether I update my links or not, the text in
the cell containing the link reference is truncated. I am not exceeding any
character length constraints here either. I know this because when I open
up the linked file B I can see the whole thing. Any ides? We are using
Excel 2003. TIA
