Default drop list from a different workbook,

You are quite right; If I use her exact range names and workbook name it
works but not with mine! I was using PartsBook.xls and the range name was
PartList. Very strange but I must be making a silly mistake - more coffee.
Thanks

Yes, I tried creating a completely new workbook and keeping it open.
Same thing - I named the range with my list; I went to my first wrkbook and
defined a name using the other workbk name and then the name. Then at Data -
validation - source I put that name. I always get the same error.

Have you read this

For data validation to work, the workbook which contains the list must be open. You could create the list in a workbook that is
always open, but hidden, such as the Personal.xls workbook.

I followed instructions in www.contextures.com/xlData Val05.html and I get
the same error. You cannot use a range from another workbook - help!
