As long as your date is on or after 01/01/1900 (although Excel gives the
wrong day of the week up to 28th Feb 1900 because it treats 1900 as leap
year)

You can simply format your date as

ddd

or use a formula in another cell

=TEXT(A1,"ddd")

where your date is in A1
