Default Issues with opening DBF (dBase) file in Excel

I'd begin by running charmap.exe Character Map, and seeing if the font
you're using in Excel contains those characters. If not, switch to another
font that does.

Hello people,

I'm pretty sure this question has been asked before a couple of times, but
I
cannot find information on this, so please forgive my ignorance:

When I open a DBF-file into Excel, it simply opens right away without any
issues at all. However, all special characters from the DBF-file (e.g.
"ë")
have been transformed to something different that cannot be used in Excel.

How can I easily convert this back or even better avoid getting them by
opening a DBF-file ?

Many thanks in advance for any reply !
