Default Cell Shading

You can use 56 colors in a workbook.

You can see the current color scheme via: tools|Options|color tab

You can change any of the 56 to something else by clicking modify.

And you can see all 56 colors if you go through the format|cells|pattern tab.

You can read lots more about how excel works with colors at David McRitchie's
site:

Does anyone know if it is possible to get apply a broader range of
colours to a cells shading?

You seem to be limited to 40 standard colours from the patterns tab of
the format cells dialog but you have a lot more flexibility for
colouring a drawing object for example.
