DON'T leave them out. They 're essential. They coerce the boolean
values (TRUE/FALSE) to numeric values (1/0). For an explanation see:

I'm sure this has a simple answer but I'm missing it.
In examples like this one:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A100="Apr 04"),--(C1:C100="New"),E1:E100)

What do the dashes (--) mean.
